Door-to-door collection for local charity a scam

The director of the local Big Brothers Big Sisters organization said today that collections being taken by someone going door to door in the name of that organization was a scam. "Somebody was knocking on doors on Hillcrest Street (in Grand Haven) near the hospital last night, claiming to be from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wisconsin,' Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lakeshore Director Regina Sjoberg said this morning. "We never go door to door and we certainly wouldn't go collecting in another state.'

Sjoberg said she was made aware of the scam when a collector knocked on the door of a home belonging to the parents of one of her staff members.

The director said she has contacted police and she wanted to make people in the community aware of the scam.

“I don’t want anybody to be scammed by anyone at any time,” Sjoberg said.

Sjoberg said they do have a legitimate fundraiser coming up — an English garden party and dressage show on Aug. 25 at Hampton Green Farms in Fruitport. People may also make contributions by going to the organization’s website at www.bbbslakeshore.org.
