Bicyclist, 5, critical after accident

A 5-year-old Hudsonville boy remained in critical this morning at a Grand Rapids hospital after riding his bicycle into the path of a car on Wednesday evening. Evan Matthew Brown suffered serious head injuries in the accident, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The boy was not wearing a helmet.

Brown was riding his bicycle south on the shoulder of 36th Avenue, south of Port Sheldon Road in Georgetown Township, just before 8 p.m. when he veered into the southbound lane and into the path of a vehicle driven by Robert Bliss of Dorr, Garvelink said. Police said Bliss, 62, could not avoid hitting the boy.

The child was riding just slightly in front of his mother, who was also on a bicycle. He was possibly intending to cross the road to the other shoulder, Garvelink said.

Evan was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital, Garvelink said.

Bliss was not injured.
