Criminal sexual conduct in the first degree is a felony in Michigan. When the violator is age 17 or older and the victim is less than 13 years old, it is punishable by a sentence of at least 25 years and up to life in prison.

Lt. Steve Kempker of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said the incident occurred just before midnight Thursday. Following an investigation, deputies arrested Hitsman on Friday.

The incident remains under investigation by Ottawa County detectives.

This family has a history of sexual offenders!!! His older brother has sexual predator convict here in GH and other criminal charges in another county related to abuse towards women.

There is nothing a 12 year old child could do that justifies a grown man having sex with her!!! I say throw the book at him and keep him off the streets. What kind of a MAN ( I use that term loosely) does this!!!

Lt. Steve Kempker and Ottawa County Prosecutors please do your job and keep the trash off the streets. It's the right thing to do!!! It's just too bad that in jail these criminals get medical, mental, dental and three meals a day!!! I know of lots of Ottawa County familes who don't have these benefits who follow the laws and have values and morals...What is our system doing?????

Has this man been charged yet? I am someone who knows the family, and I don't understand why they are moving to Florida next week already...

At the rate that persons are getting nailed for CSC's our current prison system doesn't have enough space. 83 counties send 75 inmates per day to the RGC Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson MI. (old Jackson Prison) That means they have to let go 75 per day from 40 correctional facilities if they are going to hold the 47,000 inmate population. I know people say "lock them up" but we don't have the space at $32,000 per year per inmate. Just count how many convictions per month on CSC's in the state occur. Mathematically we as taxpayers cannot sustain this with our current tax formulas. Not justifying these behaviors. Just we do not have the space in prisons anymore. The house is full. Who are we going to let go to open up a bed?
