Spring Lake woman in critical condition after fall at aquatic center

A Spring Lake woman remains in critical condition at Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids today following an accident Saturday night at the Spring Lake Aquatic and Fitness Center where she is employed. Brenda Blahnik suffered spinal and head injuries in the incident, according to her husband, Andy Blahnik. She is in the surgical critical care area at the Meijer Heart Center where she is recovering from spinal surgery, which was performed on Sunday, he said.

Andy said his wife was stable and that swelling on the brain was decreasing. Once that is far enough down, doctors will be able to get a better idea of her prognosis, he said.

“With her spinal injuries, they’re not sure if she’ll have motor skills in her legs,” Andy said.

He asked for continued prayers for her recovery.

Brenda was working on a mechanical lift, washing windows in the Aquatic Center when the lift tipped over and she was injured in the fall, said Spring Lake Public Schools Superintendent Dennis Furton.

Emergency personnel were called to the pool area of the Center at 9:40 p.m. Saturday and found Brenda still in the cage where it fell, said Spring Lake Township Fire Chief Rick Nuvill.
