Pilot killed in plane crash along highway in Allegan County

Authorities said a small plane clipped a FedEx semitrailer and crashed along U.S. 131 near a small airport in Allegan County this morning, killing the pilot. The crash happened near the Plainwell Municipal Airport, about 35 miles south of Grand Rapids. State police said 73-year-old William Frank Beswick of Holland died in the crash. Paul Brindley, who runs the airfield, told the Kalamazoo Gazette a wing of the plane clipped the trailer of a northbound semi as the plane was landing. Brindley said the pilot, the only one on board, was flying from the Holland area.

Police said the driver of the FedEx truck was OK.

The Holland Sentinel reported fog may have been a factor.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed after the crash.
