Police: Drunk driver fished out of Grand River

Police in Grand Rapids said a suspected drunken driver jumped into the Grand River to avoid capture and was fished out after about 45 minutes early today. Police said the man collided with an off-duty officer's cruiser, then ran away and jumped into the water near the fish ladder at the Sixth Street Dam. He got soaked while staying on the fish ladder, and was eventually pulled to safety by rescuers.

The man was arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution. He’s expected to face charges including drunken driving, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident.

The officer wasn’t injured.

Fish ladders are designed to help fish swim around artificial barriers such as dams or channels.
