ORIGINAL STORY: The Ottawa County medical examiner was expected to conduct an autopsy today on a Grand Valley State University student who collapsed and died during a basketball game on campus around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The 21-year-old man complained of chest pains, then collapsed while taking a break from the game at the Allendale Campus Recreation Center.

Staff members began CPR on the man after calling for police and an ambulance. GVSU police officers used a defibrillator kept in the rec center to try and revive the man. Neither they nor the Life EMS paramedics who responded to the emergency were able to revive him.

The Ottawa County medical examiner determined the man’s death was likely from natural causes, though the autopsy is expected to provide more information.
