The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that it believes the 32-year-olds were dead before the fire, which was reported Monday night at Schlee Waterfowl Preserve in Grass Lake Township. The department said it’s investigating the deaths “as a homicide.”

Authorities said they got a report of a car fire and found the 2000 Chevrolet Impala engulfed in flames. They discovered the bodies after extinguishing the fire.

Police identified the men as Anthony D. Hannah of Jackson and Lansing and Shemel Thomas of Jackson. Authorities haven’t released their cause of death.
