Man hit by pickup while trying to help animal dies

A Rockford has died, less than a week after he was hit by a pickup truck while trying to help an injured animal off a road.

Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids said James Wood, 54, died Thursday.

Wood stopped to help an animal last Saturday night when he was hit in Kent County’s Plainfield Township, north of Grand Rapids. A possum was found nearby.

The driver of the pickup and her passenger were not injured.

Wood’s neighbor, Lon Hilliker, said it probably was a natural reaction for Wood to stop and help an animal in need.
