The area of U.S. 31 in Park Township will see the first “high-visibility enforcement” Dec. 16-17, while officers will increase their presence in Grand Haven Township on Dec. 23. The final push will be Dec. 30-31 in Park Township, said Sgt. Steve Austin.

All of the increased enforcement will occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day.

Austin said the increased drinking and driving during the holiday season is the cause of many traffic accidents and fatalities. Although stricter laws have helped decrease those incidents overall, it still happens during the holidays and motorists should be on the lookout for drunk drivers, he said.

“Our goal for this holiday season is to make sure that it is safe and sober,” Austin said.

The special holiday enforcement program is funded by a grant through the state’s Office of Highway and Safety Planning.
