Police said Rosemarie Johnston, 72, was driving west on Business Interstate 196 near Paw Paw Drive when she allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. Johnston’s car then drove into the median, struck a guardrail and rolled over several times before landing back on its wheels, according to Sgt. Brent Converse of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Converse said both Johnston and a passenger in her car — William Johnston, 74 — sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by AMR Ambulance to Holland Hospital for treatment.

According to police, the Holland Township residents were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, and alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.

Converse said the accident remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department.
