Fruitport man arrested for abuse of 10-month-old

A 23-year-old Fruitport man was arrested last week for child abuse involving a 10-month-old-victim. Police said the man was watching the child at his home in the village of Fruitport while the child's biological mother was at work.

Emergency personnel from the Fruitport Township Fire Department, Fruitport Township Police Department and ProMed EMS were dispatched to the home at about 3 p.m. Feb. 1 regarding an unresponsive child with difficulty breathing. The child was transported by ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, where it was determined the child had multiple head injuries. The child was subsequently transported to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids for further evaluation and treatment.

Based on the findings of the medical professionals at DeVos Children’s Hospital, further investigation into the matter was conducted by Children’s Protective Services and the Fruitport Township Police Department. Through this investigation, it was discovered the man had struck the child multiple times, causing the injuries.

The man was arrested and lodged at the Muskegon County Jail. His name is being withheld pending arraignment.

Police also said the suspect is currently on probation for felony killing or torturing animals. He was convicted of this offense in 2009 in Muskegon County.

The name of the victim is not being released.
