The crash happened Saturday morning at Wolcott Mill Golf Course. It’s in Macomb County’s Ray Township, about 25 miles north of Detroit.

Huron-Clinton Metroparks Police Chief George Phifer told The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens that the pilot was the only person on board. He identified the victim as Charles Zichichi of Washington Township, who is believed to have been 77 or 78.

Authorities said the pilot took off in the Virus 912 shortly before from Ray Community Airport.

Zichichi was unresponsive when medical personnel reached him, and he died hours later at a hospital.

Phifer said the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
