Sgt. Brent Converse of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said the fire was reported at 1424 Sandy Run just before 11 a.m.

Upon arrival, Park Township firefighters and police noticed flames and smoke coming from the house. Emergency crews noticed nobody was home, so they forced their way in the home and discovered animals trapped inside the residence, police said.

Converse said the likely cause of the fire was a gas fireplace; however, the incident remains under investigation. No estimate on damage was available.
