Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a 275-gallon fuel oil tank — which had been about 50-percent full — leaking into the basement just before 4 p.m. About 10 gallons of the oil had spilled into the basement, according to Spring Lake Fire Marshall Brian Sipe.
The homeowner had not used the oil, and it was likely left by the previous homeowner, Sipe said. The homeowner noticed a smell coming from the basement and called the Fire Department.
“Over time, the tank itself eroded, which caused the leak,” Sipe said.
The HazMat crew used absorbent pads to contain the leak.
No one was injured in the incident.
