Lt. Mark Bennett Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said Justin Lee Kelsey was arraigned Thursday afternoon at the Hudsonville District Court on charges of false report of a felony, embezzlement of less than $20,000 and carrying a concealed weapon. The charges stem from an incident on Feb. 7 when Kelsey said he was forced to help two others rob the Family Fare store in Coopersville.

Bennett said after investigating the incident, Kelsey’s initial statements did not check out and that the store worker began changing his story.

Help from the community also led police to believe Kelsey was responsible for the incident, Bennett said.

Bennett said Kelsey met with police officials on Wednesday and admitted he made the story up.

He is currently lodged in the Ottawa County Jail on a $20,000 bond.
