Jason Quincy Arnold perished in a trailer fire that occurred at about 7 a.m. Saturday in the 15000 block of Buchanan St.

His would-be father-in-law, John Johnston, spotted the blaze, called authorities and then rushed to the smoke-filled trailer.

"I didn't see him in there, and I didn't hear him or anything," he said.

The fire chief lives across the street and responded as soon as the call came in. He said as he went out his front door, he heard a loud explosion.

By the time firefighters arrived, the entire trailer was engulfed in flames. There was little they could do.

Arnold leaves behind a fiancée and a young daughter.

"He liked to camp and hunt and fish. He loved his daughter very much," Johnston said. "He was a great guy, fun to be around. He was always joking and laughing."

Ottawa County Sheriff's deputies initially responded to the fire, and firefighters found Arnold's body inside the trailer once they put out the flames.

An autopsy is pending.
