The bus was parked in the lot across the street from the Black River Public School, 491 Columbia Ave.

Police were called to investigate when school officials found a rag in the fuel door of a bus parked near the school that was partially burned. The suspect placed a rag in the entrance to the fuel tank after removing the fuel cap and lighting it on fire. The fire set to the rag did not ignite the fumes, police said.

The attempted arson happened around 2:30 a.m., police said.

Capt. Jack Dykstra of the Holland Department of Public Safety said Thursday that detectives are reviewing and enhancing video taken at the school, which at this point provides the time the incident occurred. However, no further description of the suspect is yet available as detectives work to further enhance the digital images, Dykstra said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Holland Department of Public Safety at 616-355-1100 or Silent Observer at 877-887-4536.
