Mead Johnson Nutrition Co. spokesman Chris Perille said eight employees were treated at the Glenville, Ill.-based company's Zeeland plant or at local hospitals after being exposed to the gas early Tuesday afternoon. Perille said there have been no reports of serious health problems.
Perille said the leak was in a cylinder that is part of the facility's water treatment system, and an alarm sounded after the leak was detected. He didn't know how much chlorine leaked.
The plant was evacuated and firefighters were called to the scene.
The Zeeland plant employs about 325 people.
