Firefighters from Fruitport Township and the City of Norton Shores battled the fire discovered shortly after 9 p.m. Monday at Metric Motorsports, 4482 Airline Road.

The business had closed for the day at 6 p.m., and nobody was inside at the time of the fire, Doctor said.

“We removed about a half million dollars worth of inventory,” Doctor said. “The other inventory was on the second floor.” More than 100 motorcycles were in the second story, the chief said.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire within an hour, and had it almost completely out within three hours, Doctor said.

The cause of the fire remains uncertain, but officials were planning to head out to the scene this morning to conduct an investigation.

Metric Motorsports housed various ATVs, utility vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and other bikes in the showroom and repair shop.

When Norton Shores resident AJ Wortelboer saw smoke from down the road, he said he went closer and saw flames coming from the side of the building.

Fruitport resident Kevin Durga said he heard small “explosions” going off inside the

building, which he thought might have been from gas tanks from the motor vehicles inside.

Durga, who was an avid customer for many years, said the fire was a shame for the owner.

“It’s a very iconic place for this area,” Durga said.
