NuPak Solutions President Herb Bevelhymer said Thomas A. Carty Jr., 46, of Muskegon Township died in the afternoon accident at the Lincoln Street plant.

Firefighters said Carty was crushed by a press that made Styrofoam packaging pieces. The man was apparently trying to clear a piece that was stuck in the press when the machine activated and crushed his torso.

Bevelhymer declined to make a comment on the incident pending an investigation by safety regulators.

Funeral arrangements were not known as of late Thursday morning, he said.
