Garbage truck fire spreads into nearby field

A garbage truck was destroyed by fire early Thursday afternoon on an access road to a motel located near the Coopersville exit just off Interstate 96. Coopersville-Polkton Fire Chief Scott Schoolcraft said firefighters responded at about 2:38 p.m. to a call of the waste truck on fire on Conran Drive south of Randall Street. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the driver had dumped the burning load into the street, but that the truck was also on fire.

A third fire started when the wind blew the flames into a nearby field, Schoolcraft said. Crockery Township firefighters were then called about 2:50 p.m. to assist with their brush truck. Less than a quarter acre burned, he said.

Officials called for an ambulance to tend to the driver, Schoolcraft said. The man was not transported.

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, Schoolcraft said.
