The 78-year-old victim was in the produce area of the Meijer store on Harvey Street near Sternberg Road when the crime occurred. Police said she had briefly turned away from her shopping cart to look for something when her purse was snatched from her cart.

Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police Department said a 32-year-old Muskegon County woman reportedly approached the cart, took the woman’s purse and started toward the exit.

“The victim was unaware of the offender’s actions, but a nearby Good Samaritan witnessed the theft,” Morningstar said. “The witness yelled, notifying others of the theft, and then caught up to the suspect and removed the victim’s purse.”

The suspect got into a vehicle and left the scene, but witnesses were able to provide police with a description of the suspect and getaway car.

The suspect was later located by Whitehall police. Morningstar said the suspect was turned over to Fruitport Township police and was lodged in the Muskegon County Jail.

Police did not release the names of the victim and the suspect.
