Authorities said the trooper's state-issued rifle and badge were in the trooper's personal vehicle, and the trooper was off duty at the time.

It was discovered stolen early Monday at a Grandville hotel. It is not clear why the officer was at the hotel, or if it's protocol to carry a weapon and badge while off duty.

Area police departments were informed of the missing gun and badge, but Michigan State Police did not issue any warnings to the public, according to WZZM-TV.
