This came as much-welcomed news to friends and family of Zalsman, who have been praying for the recovery of the 6-week-old Spring Lake boy.
The boy suffered severe brain damage from a brain bleed and seizures late last week after his father allegedly shook the infant.
"I am so happy for you guys," wrote Bonnie Gebert on Facebook. "Such a sad story! Hope your little man keeps getting stronger. I am praying for you and Bentley."
Autumn Green Ames, who has been named the family spokeswoman, said this was the greatest news ever.
"I'm crying," she wrote. "Thank you so much for the photo, Kaylee."
Ames said the seizures have stopped and a ventilator has been removed.
"He is squeezing his mama's finger," she wrote on a Facebook prayer page. "A miracle. Prayers work!"
Bentley was upgraded Wednesday from critical to serious condition at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The baby’s father, Justin McIntyre, 23, also of Spring Lake, is lodged in the Ottawa County Jail on a charge of first-degree child abuse. Bond was set at $75,000.
