The Manistee Department of Public Safety said Alexis Kitchen was sitting on the steps at a friend's house at about 2:30 p.m. when the incident occurred. Family and friends pulled the girl from under the tree before paramedics arrived.

The girl was treated at West Shore Medical Center and then flown by AeroMed to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The girl's mother told Manistee officials that Alexis underwent surgery Friday to insert a rod into her leg to repair a broken femur. She also suffered injuries to her face and will be meeting with a plastic surgeon.
