ACLU sues county jail over treatment of inmates

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan claims the Isabella County Jail isn't treating women inmates fairly and doesn't allow all inmates enough time outside their cells.

The claims about the jail in Mount Pleasant were made in a federal lawsuit announced this week. The ACLU said women inmates are denied access to community service opportunities and trustee positions that are available to men.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said inmates need opportunities for community service and trustee positions, but that's determined by an outside classification system and available jobs. He said opportunities for inmates to get out of cells are limited by the facility's size.

Mioduszewski said he wants to work with the ACLU on the issues. He said the county might need a new jail.

ohwell

I am sorry but this is jail folks. Time outside their cell......Really???? I thought that was object of jail, to spend time in their cells. I got a real good idea, take all those "freedoms" away from the men. That way both genders will be equal.

ohwell, clearly you don't get it. The MDOC is supposed to rehabilitate these people so they don't end up going back to jail again and again, taking money out of your paycheck to keep our jails staffed. By giving privileges to those who show good behavior and the desire to change their ways, the MDOC can assist these people and help them develop positive habits and hopefully help them prepare to become people who contribute to society. Look of BF Skinner's study comparing positive reinforcement to punishment, if you want a behavior to change, you have to have positive reinforcement.

Oh I get it....just look at the recent article of an ex-convict beating an innocent 24 year-old to fulfill a sexual fantasy. Was he rehabilitated???? Get back to me after reading the 2 articled published here in the Tribune. Instead of handling these criminals with white gloves, they need to be punished. Being incarcerated isn't suppose to be a vacation, it is suppose to be a punishment. Instead we are giving them a life of luxury in prison and jail. There is no repercussions for their actions. Therefore we have many, many, many repeat offenders. Have they been rehabilitated? People with wrap sheets miles long, and you really think they are going to be rehabilitated? Why would they be when they get 3 free hots and a cot, full medical coverage, free education if they choose to, the list goes on. Take a look at how many are repeat offenders, then you can look at some BS study about positive reinforcement.

Right on, right on. Maybe we can combine your philosophy with that of Wally 0724. Have imprisonment mean imprisonment, with no excessive days outside, internet, big screen tv, medical care a priority over citizens, and have them earn these privileges (except for medical treatment before taxpayers). As they earn it, provide more benefits for educational credits, good behavior, etc. coupled with a contract that if they are released early, and re-offend, the penalties they face will be more severe and the benefits will be non-existent, and if they commit a capital crime they will agree to be executed.

ohwell, when is the last time you actually visited a prisoner?

ohwell

What does that have to do with anything?

Hey, Wally is right because he is "sensitive" to these criminals rights!! You just have to look past why these warts got sent prison in the first place. Twisted left thinking on display again.
