Rex Slingerland, 60, was driving north on U.S. 31 near Felch Street in Holland Township at about 11:30 p.m. when a 24-year-old man ran into the roadway. The pedestrian was struck by the front of Slingerland's 2000 GMC Jimmy, police said.
Police said Slingerland couldn't have avoided the accident.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the victim, Kyle Ackerman of Brooklyn, was at a party at a local hotel when he walked away to smoke a cigarette. Ackerman ran into the road and was hit by the SUV.
