One lane was closed where the semi rolled just east of the Lamont/Coopersville exit shortly before 7 a.m. The tanker was carrying milk.
At one point, nearly an hour after the crash, westbound traffic was backed up for more than a mile.
The truck driver, a 48-year-old Muskegon man, was pinned in the cab for a time until emergency workers got him out. Police said he suffered minor injuries.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said the driver was heading east on I-96 when he lost control and crossed over the median and into westbound traffic. His truck ended up in the ditch.
Investigators said they're not sure why he lost control of the tanker, but they do not think it was weather-related.
