State police said the man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was arrested this week at his home in Wakefield.
Troopers began investigating the man following a Nov. 20 report that he was rummaging through trash at the Wakefield-Marenisco schools' campus. Police said they determined that the man went through the large trash bins on a weekly basis.
He was being held at the Gogebic County Jail and is facing a charge of being a registered sex offender loitering in a School Safety Zone. If convicted, he could be sentenced to jail time.
