The fire was contained to a tote that firefighters removed from the house when they first arrived on the scene.

Firefighters used large exhaust fans to clear the smoke.

The renter of the home, Mandy Diedrich, said she and her son, John, had just woke up when they heard the smoke detectors going off.

“I went by the door and saw an orange glow,” she said. “I told my son to grab the dogs and get out.”

Firefighters were sent to the house at 16572 VanWagoner Road at 10:25 a.m.

Ferrysburg firefighters assisted the Spring Lake Fire Department. Crockery Township firefighters were also part of the response, but they were turned back when it was discovered there was no fire to the house.

A cause for the fire was not immediately available.
