Police said the suspects were traveling in a northbound Ford Explorer when they struck the family's westbound vehicle at about 2 p.m. They said the unidentified girl was one of six passengers in the victims' vehicle.

Five additional passengers were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A 10-year-old and 4-year-old remain hospitalized.

Police said the SUV driver and his front-seat passenger were arrested after fleeing the scene on foot. They remain lodged in the Kent County Jail, pending charges.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor.
