Edward Bylsma, 84, of Coopersville, and Steven Robin, 45, of Conklin, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both were the drivers of their vehicles, according to Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Emergency personnel were called to the intersection at 6:30 p.m. on Monday after Bylsma drove his 2008 Dodge Ram pickup truck through the stop sign at 16th Avenue and struck Robin’s 2001 Pontiac Montana van in the driver’s side door, Austin said.

Bylsma was heading west on Arthur when he failed to stop at a stop sign, Austin said. Robin was southbound on 16th Avenue.

The older man was not wearing a seatbelt. He was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

His passenger, Elizabeth Bylsma, 81, was seriously injured, and was taken by ambulance to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Robin was wearing a seatbelt, Austin said. He also died at the scene.

Police said it was unknown at the time whether or not alcohol was involved.

Toxicology tests were planned for both drivers.
