Stephen Morris, 39, is charged with two counts of larceny following the Jan. 9 theft of Tramadol.
Charges were authorized last week and Morris is free on bond. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay from his job with St. Joseph County pending the outcome of the case.
The case is being handled by prosecutors from neighboring Cass County following a request by the state attorney general's office.
