(UPDATE MONDAY, JAN. 21, 12:05 p.m.) Eastbound I-96 at 48th Avenue is now open. The highway was temporarily shut down while emergency crews policed a series of slide-offs and crashes, including at least one jack-knifed semi truck.

First responders reported several vehicles slid off the road, some through fences, between 18th and 48th avenues, around 9 a.m.

A semi-truck was reportedly jack-knifed at 18th Avenue.

It is believed there were no injuries.

Area resident Jason LeBrasseur, who submitted pictures to the Grand Haven Tribune, said he was returning from Grand Rapids and the freeway was "a solid sheet of black ice most of the way."

"Many cars were still traveling 70 mph," he said. "I later saw three of the cars that passed me in a ditch a few miles up the road."

The road was opened to traffic at 11:25 a.m.

I believe no serious injuries were reported, hopefully this is true.

Slow down, this is Michigan and Winter is here. I was only minutes behind this, and people were traveling way too fast for the conditions.

Don't get sucked in. Staying with the "flow of traffic" in winter has consequences way more serious than avoiding a ticket.

Damn it people, we are better than this... aren't we??

PS. No one was injured by a firearm during this event. Go figure.

People just drive like crazy. I go the speed limits and sometimes I get some person flying right up to the rear of the car. They blow the horn, flash the lights, flip me off and then pass. Then I noticed a quarter mile up the road headlights can be seen flashing toward the sky like a spinning top. They flipped it. I get people passing me still on icy roads going over 70+. Sometimes I see them punching their steering wheels with their fists and what appears to be a fit of rage and yelling inside the car as they pass.
