A police officer observed the man as he ran from the Wal-Mart store at 1879 E. Sherman St., said Sgt. Bruce Morningstar of the Fruitport Township Police Department. The man was pushing a cart that contained two televisions, which he loaded into a vehicle.
The Fruitport Township officer, who was familiar with similar shoplifting incidents at this location, approached the man and requested to see a receipt for the electronics, Morningstar said. The suspect did not have a receipt.
Video surveillance from the store showed the man loading the televisions into the cart, and then leaving the store without paying for them.
The man was arrested for retail fraud and lodged at the Muskegon County Jail. His identity was not immediately released.
In a separate incident, police are looking for a man who is suspected of shoplifting from a Fruitport-area store on Feb. 11.
Police are also still trying to identify a man who they say was involved in multiple shoplifting incidents at a different Fruitport store.
Anyone with information on any of these suspects is asked to call the Fruitport Township Police Department at 231-865-8477 or Silent Observer at 231-72-CRIME.
