The assault happened between 2 and 3 a.m. Feb. 18 at Wal-Mart, 1879 E. Sherman Blvd. in Fruitport Township.

Police said the assault was not a random act, and the victim and the suspect know each other, but the victim has not been cooperative with police. The victim did survive the attack, and was treated and released from a local hospital.

Police are looking for any witnesses who may have observed this incident. Witnesses are asked to call the Fruitport Township Police Department at 231-865-8477 or Silent Observer at 231-72-CRIME. Callers may remain anonymous.

We need to regulate snow shovels. What a terrible incident. This should bring to the front the danger of these weapons! Snow shovels mame. They should never be so big as to hurt someone, and should be made out of rubber!

I completely agree.. if Walmart was a no shovel zone.. this would never have happened.. perhaps they need a whistle to blow when they are attacked? Or maybe had he vomited or urinated on himself the attacker may have also just stopped. Where was the call box????

newsblogger

ooh wait.. the person was being beaten, not raped.. how silly of me to think the whistle, vomiting, urinating on ones self or running to a non existent call box would stop the violent attack.

This is the funniest comment I've seen in a while. Thanks, Walking Alive! Made my day!

I was considering we should maybe have a state registry, background check, or require a state issued permit to carry a snow shovel.
But after reading other Trib articles, I believe we should just have all stores tie a yellow ribbon on the shovels so we would know to give a wide berth to someone walking or working with one.

Of course the victim is not cooperating with authorities, it states they know each other. Unless he wants a repeat performance he had better keep his comments about this incident to himself.
I saw the footage of this "beating" on tv and thought it looked like the "attacker" was dancing; he probably hit his "buddy" by accident while doing a pirouette. Of course several pirouettes would result in numerous inadvertent strikes. I think dancing in front of Walmart with a shovel should be outlawed.

Hindsight is 20-20; close all Walmarts.

this made my day, funny guys, at least walmart people are not packing heat, would have been much more serious

I am surprised no one has yet questioned whether this was an assault shovel or a concealable hand shovel. One needs more attention than the other. Good stuff.
