Brandon Kuiper died Friday afternoon, said Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Kuiper, 16, had been in critical condition at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids since being shot Wednesday night.

Detectives said an autopsy on Kuiper's body will be performed Monday at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital's pathology department.

Kuiper was shot while with a group of teenage boys at a home on Leonard Road in Tallmadge Township. According to investigators, the boys were playing with a .22-caliber handgun in the basement of the home.

Police said drugs and alcohol were involved in the incident.

Police said Richard Usher, 18, shot Kuiper in the face during the incident. He was arrested soon after the shooting.

Usher originally faced a charge of attempted manslaughter. According to the Ottawa County Jail website, authorities are already seeking to upgrade the charges to manslaughter.

Bennett said there is a history of horseplay with guns at the home where the shooting occurred.
