The deputy was responding to a felony in progress at the time of the 5:29 p.m. crash, according to Sgt. Matt Wildfong, also of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Dep. Steve Burgess was heading west on James Street, with his overhead lights and siren activated, Wildfong said. The deputy stopped for a red light at 120th Avenue, proceeded into the intersection after all other traffic had stopped, and was struck by another vehicle, which was northbound on 120th Avenue.

Burgess and the driver of the other car, Ai Qun Zhang, 43, of Holland Township, were transported by ambulance to Holland Hospital.

Both victims were treated and released, according to Holland Hospital spokesperson Tim Breed.

The crash remains under investigation.
