Deputy Fire Chief John Kriger said when he arrived on the scene fire was coming out the back window of one of the four-plex units at the Country Villa apartments, 17546 144th Ave.

All of the residents in the building, the occupants of the two upper apartments, evacuated. Nobody was at home in the apartment that burned, Kriger said. The other lower apartment was unoccupied.

Firefighters from Spring Lake Township and Ferrysburg assisted the Crockery Township Fire Department at the scene.

The cause and origin of the fire is still under investigation, Kriger said.

The lower apartment was gutted by fire and there was smoke damage to the upper apartment.
