The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department reported that Spencer Daniel McGregor died at the scene of the 5:15 a.m. crash.
McGregor was traveling in a Jeep northwest on Mercury Drive, when it appeared he lost control and crossed the center lane, said Sgt. Kevin Allman.
The vehicle left the road on the south side, rolled over and struck a tree. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation.
Community reaction was swift Saturday to the loss of such a young life. Students – current and former – of Grand Haven High School changed their social media profile photos to those that included Spencer and wrote about their loss.
“Just another example that God only takes the best,” wrote Jillian Rae VanderHyde. You will be in our hearts forever. My thoughts and prayers will be with your family and friends. R.I.P Spencer McGregor it was too early for you to go, but heaven gained another angel.”
Madasyn Schroeder echoed that sentiment.
“Rest in peace, Spencer,” she wrote. “Not for a second since I found out have you and our memories left my mind. You are so loved, by so many. I can't imagine what life is going to be like without you.”
Ashley McDowell said he’ll be missed.
“Thank you for all the late-night talks and so many smiles,” she wrote. “I know you're up there kick-flipping in heaven.”
Spencer’s friend Brad DeBruyn posted a photo of the two of them at what appears to be a party and wrote this: “I love you buddy and miss you. I know you’re in heaven watching over all of us. I will never forget you. Man, we were so close, and you have a lot of other people who loved you, too! I hope I make it to heaven to see you again buddy. Rest in peace bro.”
