Fire departments in eight Michigan communities are expected to get more than $1.3 million in federal grants to help with vehicle purchases and operations costs.

The grants from a Federal Emergency Management Agency program were announced Thursday by U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

The Grand Haven Township Fire and Rescue Department is getting about $55,000 of the grant money.

Other communities getting a piece of the grant are Albion, Grayling, Rogers City, Hartland-Deerfield, Mellen Township, Melvindale and Marengo Township.

From what I read on the Detroit AP wire just about every fire department which applied for this grant money was issued a check. So with GH Twp receiving this money how will it be spent??? What kind of vehicle are we purchasing???... Operations costs???? I believe we are paying a mileage for operations and equipment cost... Does this mean we get a township tax refund??? or is it more wasteful spending.... I'm hoping the FEMA Inspector General is watching the purchases. We know the feds are investigating several fire departments in Muskegon County for improper spending of these types of grants.

Wow newspaperlawyer....you never pass on an opportunity to bash local emergency services do you? I know of several departments that have applied for these grants and not received one so your theory is bull. Kudos to grand haven township for receiving one. You say several placed in muskegon are under investigation for misuse of these grants please tell us which ones. I think your full of it. I dont know what your problem is with emergency responders in this area but I have had it with you. Last few weeks you complained about spring lake possibly getting a new fire station which they need and before that you bashed on grand haven city and now grand haven township. What is your deal?

I don't have any issues with emergency responders... but when I read the purchase of vehicles or operating cost.. I as a taxpayer really would like to know what kind of vehicle or vehicles are being purchased. Their are many loop holes that come with most federal grants. If I was starting a medical responding unit like GH TWP did and did not have the money for the cost of all the equipment which is required... and now they need to return this borrowed equipment... and don't have the money to purchase this equipment... The question is... was this additional cost added onto the new fire truck or are we using grant money for this. I'm hoping the feds have ask how this money will be used.

Why don't you get off your rear and go to a board meeting and ask them instead of whining like a little kid. Your life must really suck sitting around all day throwing a temper tantrum everytime you don't get your way. Get over it and move on in your life. Spend some more time with family and be thankful for what you have.

newspaperlawyer, You obviously do have a problem with fire and emergency services personnel. One only has to look at your history of attacks on public safety personnel. A few weeks ago you commented on Spring Lake Twp. building a fire station, also a few weeks ago on MLIVE you commented about Holland Public Safety getting a Hummer for there tactical team. More recently you have attacked Grand Haven Public Safety and several times over you have attacked Grand Haven Twp. Fire Department. You obviously have some issues. If you live in one of these places I can see being concerned about your taxes for that community, however I am sure you don't live in them all. You recently commented on MLIVE about the state police helicopter flying aroung G.R. so tell me again how you don't have a problem with emergency services. Thank god everyone is not like you or I couldn't keep doing it. You have no idea what our job is like. Almost all of us selflessly serve the communities doing the best job we know how. I am proud of all my years in emergency medical services for this area and others. If you wish to know what the fire department is spending the grant money on I tell you to go and ask them, or if your to ashamed to do it in person call and ask. I am sure they would be happy to explain anything you want to know. I know this for a fact becuase when I did have questions about the fire truck recently purchased I asked questions and they were happy to answer them all. I dont' know why you are always so sure of ill intent with these folks. These are some of the finest people you will ever meet. People that respond to things that you have zero understanding about what it is like to go to and see. These are the same folks that have responded to recent tragedies like the accidents on Mercury Drive and numerous medicals saving live and property but people like you feel the need to try to find a negative light to hold them under. You really are a special sort of something.

oh and I almost forgot....the type of grant that is being talked about in the link provided is different than the type Grand Haven Twp. got.....get your facts correct. One is a homeland security grand and the other is a fire act grant.

newspaperlawyer

OMG.. is this all you can bring is bashing the facts. All these grants come thru FEMA which is part of the Office of Home Land Security. FEMA issues many grants yearly to Public Safety Units. Some of the grants funded are wasteful spending... Lets face it your in the little leagues with your comments. Yes I pay taxes on several pieces of land across West Michigan including Norton Shores, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Grand Haven City, Grand Haven Twp, and even the City of Holland which is up for sale. So go grab another big soda and some Cheetos and put another episode of Chicago Fire or Emergency in your VCR or DVD.

TWPGUY

Agreed. What is his deal?

I guess the feds really do have money to burn (pun intended).

forreal

i totally agree with newspaperlawyer...we just had our taxes go way up for a brand new fire engine that they miscalculated on the first time...now we get federal money???(which is great) but to do what with??? we deserve a refund forsure then...it's really getting bad around here when they ding us for their mistake and then get some more money, to do what with ???????

TWPGUY

If you do the math its less than 5 dollars per household if you live in GHT for the grant that they just got. Really people its 5 dollars, One time charge. Who cares. Don't get bent out of shape about it. Kudos to GHTF/R for getting the grant. I have heard how hard it is to get these grants and how many steps are involved. Again CONGRATS GHTF/R!

Tri-cities realist

First off, kudos to all of our area emergency services personnel, we really do appreciate that you are there for us in our time of need, and for that you should be paid adequately and treated with respect.

TWPGUY... it may be only $5 per household (I haven't done the math), however my issue with this is on a larger scale. Why do we need the FEDERAL govt. collecting and redistributing this money in the first place? I would much rather we incur local levies to pay for such equipment and services. What I would like to know is how much did this $55,000 grant cost the US taxpayer. My guess is that it is probably over $100,000 when you figure in all of the bureaucracy that it takes to collect and select which municipalities will receive the funds, not to mention the local cost of applying for these grants, etc. And we wonder why we are $16 TRILLION in debt... utter insanity, wake up people.

twpresident

really? taxes went way up. I am a twp. resident and my taxes did not shoot way up. The fire truck was a (one) time tax for needed equipment. If you want to complain about taxes look at other communities. We here in Grand Haven Twp. are blessed with the (i believe last time I checked) 3rd lowest taxable mills in the county. That's right! we are close to the lowest in the county and look at all the great things we have. Excellent schools, parks and public safety services. I am happy they recieved the grant and I am sure they will put it to good use. I know this is not mistake or anything related to the purchase of the fire truck, you have to put in for these kinds of grants over a year ahead of time to get them. I am just glad some of our federal tax dollars are coming back into the community to be put to good use here vs. paying for some politicians luxurious vacation that he always needs to take.

TWPGUY

Taxes did not shoot up. It was a one time cost of somewhere around 20 dollars a household I believe. Be thankful we have such great fire/ems and police services. I am glad I get to see what my taxes go towards in the township. I have have family in a neighboring township and they are jealous of our services, parks, bike paths full time fire department that is ALS trained. We are spoiled. Please just get over the fact your money goes to a good cause and that they show you what it goes towards.

And again kudos to our fire department for getting the grant. Whatever it is they are planning on buying with the money, it is only going to help us in the long run.

newspaperlawyer

Guess what people.. I just received a letter today from Grand Haven Township stating they are sending out a team of personnel to enter our private property to take pictures of our homes during April 15 thru April 19. They state this is to verify the information the TWP has on hand on our properties. They also ask to gain access to our back yards if needed. I'm not sure about this type of action people. I'm not sure how legal this is either.

People

Its probably a conspiracy to take all your money. Or perhaps there setting up a place for the UFO to land and take you home, or maybe there doing something they have done for years. Call the police if your concerned. 911 is the number incase you don't know.

Hey look newspaperlawyer, you do know how to pick on someone besides the fire department. Becuase they don't do the assessing. This is actually standard practice in most communities to have assessing officials come out and take pictures of your property. I have seen them on mine before. If you dont' like it tell them to leave and get off your property. Then they will guess the valuation of your house. Why bring that up in this article??? Oh and by the way, if you live in Grand Haven Twp. why are you so concerned about what happens in Spring Lake, Grand Haven City, Muskegon, Holland City, Norton Shores and all these other communities?????????? oh that's right you are one of those people that just looks for things to complain about.

GHJames

I've got bad news for you my periodical barrister, they have already flown a drone over your house and taken pictures to see if you were wearing your seatbelt when tanning in a lawnchair and identified if that was an alcoholic beverage you were drinking. The SOB's even triangulated the circumfrance of you fire pit so they can send that new truck over ASAP with a citation to help pay for the new tires nobody figured into the cost. All this while refusing to assist an elderly woman who has fallen at the corner of Ferris and 31.

forreal

let's please remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion!!! and now the township needs to verify information they have had for years on hand about our properties and that we've been getting taxed on for years and years??? this sounds like a bunch of malarky to me and yes, it better be legal!!! good grief, what is next???
