Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers responded about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday to Abundant Faith Word Church after a person walking dogs reported seeing a man tampering with a vent on the roof. Investigators said the man was apparently trying to steal copper wire from the building's heating and cooling system.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was no longer on the roof. Police said he had fallen about 15 feet into a church courtyard, where they found him.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The case is expected to be sent to prosecutors for a decision about possible charges.

The guy was probably going to install a WiFi antenna, for all to use should services run a little long, and wanted to keep his generous donation of time and materials anonymous; and we have to go and label the guy a thief. I'm guessing that he doesn't have health insurance either; the state is now picking up the tab for his medical bills.
