A car struck Eugene Post at about 8:15 a.m. while he was riding his bicycle in the area of U.S. 31 and Madison Street.

Police said Post tried to get to the west side of the highway from the east side.

Friends said Post was likely on his way to the Rendezvous restaurant for breakfast.

Traffic stopped and someone apparently waived the bicyclist across, not realizing there was oncoming traffic in the inside lane. said Lt. Joe Boyle of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

"He was conscious and alert when he was taken to the ambulance," said Sgt. Randy Poel of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

"He had lots of bumps, bruises and scrapes," Poel said.

The ambulance transported Post to North Ottawa Community Hospital.

"He is stable. He is still in the emergency room," said hospital spokesperson Jennifer VanSkiver at about 10:30 this morning.
