Rescuers had to access the vehicle from Consumers Energy property after the 2:19 p.m. crash because the SUV came to rest in a remote area off of Lakeshore Avenue, near Croswell Street.
The driver, 19-year-old Javier Tinoco of Holland Township, was pinned in the vehicle with head and leg injuries. Emergency workers removed him from the mangled SUV and sent him by ambulance to Holland Community Hospital, where he is currently listed in serious condition.
Ottawa County Sheriff's Sgt. Valerie Weiss said the driver had been on Croswell Street, traveling toward Lakeshore when he failed to stop at the stop sign, and the SUV launched off the hill.
Weiss said an investigation continues into why he failed to stop.
