The 24-year-old male driver, a West Olive resident, and the 21-year-old female passenger, a Gobles resident, were transported by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital following the 11:23 p.m. crash.

The driver was later transferred by AeroMed helicopter to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Police said he was listed in stable condition today in the critical care unit.

Police did not release their names, but said the driver had “pretty significant injuries.” The passenger was not as seriously injured, they said.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor,” said Lt. Lee Hoeksma of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. “The case is open pending some charges and more investigation.”

The West Olive man was driving a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am north on Lakeshore at a high rate of speed, Hoeksma said.

Witnesses reported he was driving erratically, the officer said.

The man attempted to pass another vehicle, lost control, went off the road into a ditch and hit the tree.
