The Van Buren County Sheriff's Department identified the victim as Ayala Shulman. She and another female were walking on 68th Street in Geneva Township early Thursday when she was hit by a Toyota Camry.

Authorities said the driver was trying to avoid the other pedestrian when his car struck Shulman 35 miles west of Kalamazoo. She was wearing black clothes on a dark, rural road with patchy fog present.

Police said alcohol and speed were not factors.
