The house, at 16977 Van Wagoner Road just east of U.S. 31, was considered "fully involved" by 2:30 p.m.
Heavy smoke could be seen rolling from the home as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze at 2:45 p.m. By 3:20 p.m. the blaze was extinguished and firefighters cut into the roof to ventilate the home.
Curtis, who works third shift, said neighbors knocked on his door to wake him up after they saw smoke.
VanWagoner Road across U.S. 31 was closed to traffic while emergency crews worked the scene.
Officials gave the go-ahead to open the road at 4:05 p.m.
