Police said Steven D'Ottavio, 19, of Brewster, N.Y., was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

A front seat passenger in D'Ottavio's car — Andrew Holbrook, also 19, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. — was flown by helicopter to Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids. His injuries were not reported.

The Zeeland Police Department said D'Ottavio was driving a 1994 Pontiac Firebird north on State Street at 1:08 a.m. when he failed to stop for a flashing red light at Business Loop 196. Police said a second vehicle, driven by a 23-year-old West Olive woman, Elizabeth Lubben, struck the driver's side door of the Firebird.

Lubben was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer and had no passengers. She sought treatment at Holland Hospital, police said.

Police said it appeared as though both drivers and the passenger wore safety restraints.

Zeeland police were assisted at the scene by Ottawa County Sheriff's deputies, AMR Ambulance, AeroMed and the Zeeland Fire-Rescue Department.

You see, this all starts from the character of a person. If you're a slicker, you're probably going to go with a BMW, but usually these persons don't respect the traffic lights (at least, that's what I heard the rule is in Russia!). A strong person with a strong sense of morality would definitely go for a Nissan, like my brother-in-law, for example. He knew what he wanted, he went to the Nissan dealers in Hartford CT and I've never heard him having a crash or not stopping at the red light. Good thing these guys wore their seat belts.

It was the second fatal crash at that intersection in five weeks. - Shimon Haber
