Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler said Thursday afternoon's attack in the Muskegon County Jail was without provocation.

The incident occurred near a second-floor housing unit. The deputies are described as 25-year and 19-year veterans.

Roesler said the plastic was used as "stabbing devices," but the deputies were not stabbed. They were released Thursday night from an area hospital.

The prisoner has been in the jail since October, awaiting trial on charges of operating a methamphetamine lab and being a habitual offender.

He has been returned to a state prison as prosecutors review possible charges.
